Fertilizers enhance the growth of plants. This goal is met in two ways, the traditional one being additives that provide nutrients. The second mode by which some fertilizers act is to enhance the effectiveness of the soil by modifying its water retention and aeration. 
Fertilizers typically provide, in varying proportions:
three main macronutrients (NPK):

NPK 15-5-25 available in MOP-based, SOP-based, and Nitrate-based forms, is a versatile fertilizer beneficial for various crops, providing Nitrogen and Potassium, promoting plant growth, flowering, and fruiting.

Is There Any Harm in Using NPK Fertilizer?

There is no harm in NPK fertilizers in conscious use. However, fertilization without soil analysis may cause the reintroduction of sufficient minerals to the soil, and an excess of some elements may cause a problem.
